Meta is Preparing to Launch the Web Version of the Threads App, Transforming Online Conversations
The Wall Street Journal says that Meta will unveil the web version of Threads, its rival to X (formerly known as Twitter), early this week. It has been frustratingly lacking a web version ever since the short-form posting service started.
The functionality and better search (actually, search at all—right now, you can only search for usernames on the site) are being worked on by the firm, according to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, who stated earlier this month that it would be ready in “the next few weeks.”
The WSJ claims that its sources have informed them that the feature’s “launch plans aren’t final and could change.” The previous week, Mosseri wrote on Threads that Meta has been testing “an early version internally for a week or two,” but that it still “needs some work” before being made widely available.
Only a month and a half ago, Threads debuted as a very basic Twitter clone. It immediately surpassed the 100 million user mark and populated with businesses and celebrities, but it lacked a number of essential features, which the firm has been gradually developing.
The fact that the company just included a follow feed and the ability to confirm a link with your Mastodon profile suggests that Meta is at least somewhat serious about integrating with the decentralized social network protocol Activity Pub.
