Samantha Woll, President of Detroit Synagogue, Tragically Discovered Fatally Stabbed at Her Residence
Samantha Woll, who was President of a Detroit church, had to deal with a terrible event on a Saturday morning. She was discovered outside of her home in Lafayette Park, an area east of downtown Detroit.
Sam, who was 40 years old, was in charge of the Isaac Agree Downtown Detroit Synagogue. She had worked for Holly Democrat U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin and for another Democrat running for attorney general, Dana Nessel.
The cops found a very disturbing scene. Someone had been stabbed several times and was found in the 1300 block of Joliet Place.
They found Samantha’s house by following a trail of blood, which showed that the crime took place there. James White, the chief of police in Detroit, asked people to be patient while they started an investigation. He said that all of their resources were being used to help with the case, even though the crime had raised a lot of questions.
Sad and shocked people who knew Samantha heard about her terrible death. Attorney General Dana Nessel spoke about her sadness and said that Samantha was a kind, devoted person who worked hard for her neighborhood, state, and country. She made it clear that Samantha worked to improve the world for everyone through her faith and her work as an activist.
Mayor Mike Duggan of Detroit also said he was sorry and called Samantha “one of the city’s great young leaders.” He had just recently met her at the dedication of the newly renovated synagogue, which she had led with great pride and energy.
Samantha had been the leader of the Synagogue since 2022 and was involved in a number of Jewish groups in the area. The rabbi of the shul was shocked and saddened by Samantha’s sudden death.
So far, the cops haven’t found out why the crime was done. At about 6:30 a.m., they got a call about a woman who had been found on the ground and wasn’t moving. Sadly, they said she was dead at the scene. The FBI is also helping with the investigation because the Detroit cops asked them to.
As of Saturday afternoon, cops were still looking into the area where Samantha was killed. The area around the properties was blocked off with caution tape because it is an upscale townhome neighborhood built by the famous architect Mies van der Rohe. There were K-9 units from the Michigan State Police seen looking in the bushes.
Samantha Woll had worked in state and local politics for a long time, running campaigns for different politicians. State Senator Stephanie Chang was a close friend of hers. They had known each other for about 20 years, since they were both students at the University of Michigan.
They had been to a wedding together the night before she was found, and were seen smiling with the bride and groom. Samantha was going through a good time because she was in charge of reopening the downtown Synagogue and was looking forward to getting a new job.
People who worked with and knew her remember her as a happy, upbeat, and wonderful person who made everyone around her happy. She was U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin’s deputy district manager from 2019 to 2021, and Slotkin praised her for always being able to help people, whether they were in politics or the Jewish community.
Again from Detroit, U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, wrote on social media that Samantha was a friend and an organizing community member with bright eyes and a sweet smile. She was loved and missed by many in the community, who asked for thoughts for her family and the community as a whole.
Samantha was named one of The Detroit Jewish News’ “36 under 36” in 2017. The honor recognized her work as co-chair of the American Jewish Committee’s ACCESS Detroit Young Leadership Program and founder of the Muslim-Jewish Forum of Detroit.
This grassroots group wanted to help young adults of these faiths meet and understand each other better. It was a reflection of Samantha’s desire to heal the world and bring people together.
