El Chapo’s wife released from US prison after serving three years
Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, was released from a US prison on Wednesday after serving nearly two years for drug trafficking and money laundering.
In November 2021, Coronel was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to charges related to her husband’s drug empire. In addition, she was ordered to serve four years of supervised release and forfeit $1.5 million.
“We can confirm Emma Coronel Aispuro was released from the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) today, September 13, 2023,” FBOP spokeswoman Randilee Giamusso wrote in an email to CNN.
“For reasons of privacy, safety, and security, the FBOP does not provide additional information on those who are no longer in our custody,” she continued.
According to the prison bureau’s inmate locator, Coronel was incarcerated in a residential reentry management facility in Long Beach, California.
Coronel, a dual citizen of the United States and Mexico, expressed regret during her sentencing for her involvement with Guzman and the Sinaloa Cartel and for any damage she may have caused.
Guzman, who twice escaped from prison in Mexico, is currently serving a life sentence at the Supermax prison in Colorado after being convicted of criminal enterprise, drug trafficking, and firearms offenses in 2019.
Prosecutors labeled him a “ruthless and bloodthirsty leader” of the Sinaloa cartel.
Members of the still-active cartel were sanctioned in February by the Biden administration for their involvement in the illicit and lethal fentanyl and methamphetamine trade, according to US officials.
