Jada Pinkett Smith: Will Smith and I Have Been Separated for 7 Years
The famous “Oscars Slap” happened six years before Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith separated, she said in an interview that aired Wednesday. At last year’s Academy Awards, Smith hit comic Chris Rock on stage for making fun of his wife, which brought a lot of attention to the couple’s marriage.
Pikett Smith told NBC News that the two had been living “totally separate lives” for years before the famous event. In an early clip from an interview to promote her new book, “Worthy,” she said, “By the time we got to 2016, we were just tired of trying.” For many years, the couple rejected rumors of affairs and an open marriage over and over again.
Pinkett Smith, on the other hand, talked freely about a “entanglement” she had with musician August Alsina while she was separated from her husband in 2020. According to the piece from Wednesday, they are still formally married, but they are no longer living together.
If you asked Pinkett Smith why they kept their breakup a secret, she said, “We’re just not… ready yet” and “We’re still trying to figure out how to be in partnership.” Smith told People magazine in a different interview, “We just love each other deeply, and we are going to figure out what that means for us.”
In a piece from her book that came out Wednesday, Pinkett Smith also talked about the March 2022 Oscars. Rock made a joke about Pinkett Smith’s close-cropped head while he was on stage. She has hair loss.
Smith got up on stage and hit the comic hard in the face. He then went back to his place and yelled bad words at the host. In the clip, Pinkett Smith talks about how she thought the slap was a joke at first, and even after realizing it wasn’t, she wasn’t sure “why Will is so upset.”
“We had been living separate lives and were there as family, not as husband and wife,” she says. Pink Smith told People that Rock had asked her to go on a date when he thought she and Smith were no longer together.
“I think every summer all the reports would come out that me and Will were getting a divorce, and this particular summer, Chris thought that we were getting a divorce,” she shared with the magazine.
“He called me and said, ‘I’d love to take you out,'” she said, adding that she had told him straight out that they were not getting a divorce. “He was shocked. “He apologized a lot, and that was the end of it,” she said.
It was on the set of Smith’s show “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” in 1994 that they met for the first time. Smith was married to his first wife at the time, but he later split up with her. They have two kids together, named Jaden and Willow.
