Reliance Poised to Acquire Disney’s India Operations in Landmark Deal
Sources say that Reliance Industries and Walt Disney Co. are about to make a big deal in India. When this deal is done, Reliance will have more power over Disney’s $10 billion business in India. Disney will still have a little piece of the business. They have different ideas about how much the business is worth. Disney says it’s $10 billion, while Reliance says it’s more like $7 billion to $8 billion.
Companies from both sides are likely to make this huge business deal public next month. It’s also been said that some of Reliance’s media companies will join Disney Star as part of the deal. They haven’t decided on the deal or how much everything is worth yet, though. It’s likely that Disney will keep some of the business even after they trade stocks and money. Disney may also keep some of their assets for a while longer.
A Disney representative in India didn’t say anything about this, and neither did a Reliance spokesman.
Last week, Reliance got a $2.7 billion deal to show the Indian Premier League in 2022. This is a big move for the company. Their rise in the Indian entertainment business shows that they’re getting bigger and bigger. They even chose to show the famous Indian cricket tournament for free this year because they had a deal with the IPL.
They also got a deal earlier this year to show HBO shows in India. Those shows used to belong to Disney.
It’s been good for Disney in India too. An exciting Cricket World Cup match between India and New Zealand was seen by a lot of people. 43 million people watched, which is more than the 35 million people who watched the India-Pakistan match this month.
